Little Lunch Lecture – 12 noon – Site Y
February 19, 2021
Governor John White reported that when he departed Roanoke Island to return to England in September of 1587, the plan was for the colonists to relocate “50 mile into the maine.” Historians have variously interpreted this to mean that the colonists either moved to the east side of Hampton Roads, or that they moved inland in North Carolina.
This presentation will describe the archaeological research conducted by the First Colony Foundation that has identified 2 “Lost Colonist” sites in Bertie County; evidence that the 1587 colony did in fact relocate inland along the Albemarle Sound/Chowan River.
