Outer Banks Conservationists: Education Through Preservation
Since 1980, Outer Banks Conservationists (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization), has been preserving natural, historic, and cultural resources along the Outer Banks. OBC began its restoration work at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse compound in historic Corolla over 40 years ago, making the lighthouse the first in the state open to the public for climbing. The group later restored an antebellum, mid-19th century homestead on Roanoke Island that is the focus of a working farm and living history site (named Island Farm) that is open to the public today. Today, OBC owns and operates the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in historic Corolla and Island Farm on Roanoke Island, and connects with the public through innovative educational programs, ongoing historic research, and special events and workshops.
