Controlled fire helps maintain longleaf pine forests by keeping the understory open and allowing more sunlight to reach the forest floor.  Controlled fires are necessary to mimic the natural process of a longleaf pine ecosystem which helps native plants thrive in their natural habitats.  Check out these photos from a recent controlled fire at Foscue, an NCCLT conservation property in Jones County, NC!  (Photo credit Steve Long)
