Reaves Chapel Restoration Fund

Reaves Chapel Restoration Complete!
…but the fundraising isn’t over.
After years of dedication and hard work, the restoration of Reaves Chapel in Navassa is complete! This remarkable achievement preserves one of southeastern North Carolina’s most culturally significant African American landmarks, ensuring that its history and legacy remain alive for future generations.
Built between 1860 and 1880 by formerly enslaved Gullah Geechee laborers, Reaves Chapel stands as more than just a building; it embodies the spirit and resilience of a community that has faced numerous challenges. For over 125 years, this 1,100 square foot wooden chapel was a sanctuary for worship, a center for celebrations, and a beacon of hope during times of social upheaval. Its bell rang out for both joyous and solemn occasions, and it provided a crucial space for communal gatherings through the Jim Crow era and the Civil Rights movement.
In a partnership between the Cedar Hill West Bank Heritage Foundation and the Coastal Land Trust, restoration began in 2019 and was completed in early 2025. This project holds deep significance for the local community and for all who have supported the Coastal Land Trust and Cedar Hill West Bank Heritage Foundation’s efforts to preserve this important piece of African American heritage. To celebrate this historic milestone, nearly 200 people gathered on March 7, 2025 for a special dedication ceremony. The event was a joyful occasion, filled with music, gratitude, and reflection.
Looking ahead, the goal is to transfer ownership of Reaves Chapel to the state so that it can be operated as a museum and community space. The Chapel’s preservation ensures that its rich history will continue to be shared and celebrated, honoring the resilience and contributions of the Gullah Geechee people and the broader African American community in North Carolina.
This work would not have been possible without all the amazing support of our donors, especially The Orton Foundation. However, we are still seeking donations to replenish internal project facilitation account which can be essential for future projects. Please help ensure we are prepared for the next great opportunity.
