Laura Brockington: Duke Stanback Fellow

Laura Brockington is currently a graduate student at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. She is studying Ecosystem Science and Conservation.

As the Coastal Land Trust’s Onslow Bight Climate Resiliency Stanback Fellow this summer, she assisted the stewardship team in prioritizing land parcels within the Onslow Bight region of the coast.

The Onslow Bight landscape includes all or portions of nine counties in the mid-coast, stretching from the Pamlico River to the Northeast Cape Fear River. This region is rich in natural, scenic, recreational, and military values of interest to many conservation groups along with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Laura used criteria such as climate resiliency and biodiversity. She used geospatial software to create models and maps that will be used to better understand how the Coastal Land Trust can best prioritize land to conserve in this region.

During her summer with us,  Laura was also able to visit many of our already protected preserves, her favorite being the B.W. Wells Savannah in Pender County.
