Project Description
Gales Creek Preserve at Camp Sam Hatcher
Coastal Land Trust’s Gales Creek Preserve at Camp Sam Hatcher is a stunning 360-acre nature preserve along Gales Creek, a tributary of the Bogue Sound, in Carteret County, NC. The preserve features a unique pine ecosystem including pond pine pocosin, loblolly pine drainages, and upland longleaf pine sandhills home to several rare flora and fauna. The preserve also serves as a critical habitat corridor between Gales Creek and the 167,000-acre Croatan National Forest.
The Coastal Land Trust acquired this preserve in three separate transactions and is working to restore areas of longleaf pine habitat. Additionally, the Coastal Land Trust permanently protected 20 acres of private, adjacent land owned by Camp Albemarle. The Gales Creek Preserve at Camp Sam Hatcher offers exceptional opportunities for environmental education and volunteer contributions amongst the open spaces, campgrounds, and majestic longleaf pine forests.
This preserve is open by appointment only and is used as an outdoor classroom by Camp Albemarle and other partners
