Welcome Carlos Torres Baéz to the Coastal Land Trust

Carlos Torres Báez has more than 20 years of experience in conservation, land stewardship, and ecological restoration. Carlos comes to the Coastal Land Trust from his previous role as Deputy Regional Director at Para la Naturaleza in Puerto Rico which manages more than 40,000 acres of natural protected areas and historic sites throughout Puerto Rico. His experience includes managing protected areas and conservation projects, environmental education, community partnerships, and working across forests, wetlands, agricultural lands, and coastal ecosystems.

He currently serves as a Commission Member at the World Commission on Protected Areas, providing technical expertise on protected area policy, conservation planning and management. Earlier in his career he was Land Stewardship Project Manager for the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo, an accredited land trust in California.

Carlos grew up near the ocean in Puerto Rico, and has always enjoyed spending time outdoors. He holds a bachelor’s degree in General Agriculture and Tropical Forestry from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and a master’s degree in Biology, specializing in Ecological Restoration, from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He and his family have relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, and he is excited to join the Coastal Land Trust and get to know the region. Outside of work, he enjoys surfing, hiking, birdwatching, and spending time outdoors with his family.
